Breastfeeding Osteopathic Manual Therapy Study

A study conducted by Kirsty Greenwood as part of her PhD at Southern Cross University and supervised by Dr. Frances Doran, Professor Sandra Grace, Associate Professor Roger Engel and Associate Professor David Todd

What is the project about?

Lactation consultants, midwives and maternal health nurses often refer infants with breastfeeding difficulty to osteopaths. This project aims to compare the effect of Osteopathic Care with Lactation Consultant Care for infants with breastfeeding difficulty.

Requirements for participating in the research

To participate in this project, your baby must be under 6 months of age and breastfed or mixed fed (breast and bottle-fed). Your baby must not have a known developmental delay or diagnosed medical condition that is affecting their ability to breastfeed.

To enrol in the study

Book in for a pre-screening consultation to confirm your eligibility to participate.

If you and your infant are eligible for the study and consent to participate, you will be randomly allocated to either the Lactation Care Only or Lactation plus Osteopathic Care group. We cannot predict which group you will be allocated to.

The Lactation Care only group will receive up to two face-to-face sessions and up to four telehealth calls with a Lactation consultant over a 4-week period. The Lactation plus Osteopathic care group will receive up to two face-to-face sessions and up to two telehealth calls with a Lactation consultant plus up to three Osteopathic sessions with an Osteopath over a 4-week period.

All Lactation and Osteopathic sessions in the trial are provided at no cost.
